Stephen King : The Gunslinger : The Dark Tower I

Posted by carolinakioty on June 18, 2008

This is the intro taken from the front of the revised and expanded version of the book:

In the first book of this brillant series, Stephen King introduces readers to one of his most enigmatic heroes, Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger.  Nothing will ever be the same.  Roland’s quest for the Dark Tower takes readers on a wildly epic ride – through parallel worlds and across time.  A classic tale of colossal scope – crossing over terrain from The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, Insomnia, The Talisman, Black House, Hearts in Atlantis, ‘Salem’s Lot, and other familiar King haunts – the adventure takes hold with the turn of each page.

And the tower awaits. . . .

The Gunslinger

This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own.  A spellbinding tale of good versus evil, it features one of Stephen Kings most powerful creations – the gunslinger, a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of the lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier Western legend.

The gunslinger’s quest involves the pursuit of the man in black, a liaison with the ravenous Alice, and a friendship with the boy from New York called Jake.  Both grippingly realistic and eerily dreamlike, The Gunslinger is stunning proof of Stephen King’s storytelling sorcery.

Come with me on an adventure as I read my favorite series of all times.  I love this story and would like to share my thought on it and hear your thoughts as well.  I will have one post for each book and just keep a running commentary under each one.  Feel free to leave comments, agree with me, disagree with me, offer your own insights.   Just keep it clean please.

Caitlin – Texting in Texas

Posted by carolinakioty on June 18, 2008

After an hour delay in lift off, circling DFW because of storms and the crazy drivers of the shuttle buses, Caitlin arrived safe and sound and a little air sick.  We forgot the airsickness bracelets, oops.  From the time she left the school until she went to bed last night I received 40 text messages. Good thing we went in for the unlimited huh.  Although I have to admit I love being able to talk to her like this and we avoid all the roaming charges. I get to hear things she wouldn’t think to tell me in a phone call.  Like the steak is better in Texas, the stop lights are sideways and Raleigh’s airport food is dry and nasty ; don’t get the Sausage, Egg and Cheese bagels.

They are staying at the Sheraton in Dallas Texas. I am guessing there is only one? That is where HOSA is having its conference. They have today free since their team is not presenting until tomorrow. So what are they doing today? Going to 6 flags of course, I googled it and its in Arlington Texas called 6 flags over Texas of course lol. They show a wicked ride looks like “Superman?”  You can see for yourself:

Six Flags Coobrila

I have been to Kings Dominion when I was 13, Disney world when I was 14. That is it. Every year at Cragmont the kids go to Carrowinds. The 6-8th graders take a year end trip every year to Carrowinds or Bush Gardens, the 7th and 8th grade band goes to Kings Dominion. Amusement parks are not all that exciting to my kids. Gee are they spoiled or what?!?!?!?!  I wouldlove to go to Bush Gardens, both of them Williamsburg in Virginia and Africa in Florida.

I will let everyone know how her fun day was later. Right now I promised the boys to load a new game on the computer, play video games with Jacob, maybe cut Christopher’s hair if he trusts me (not a great idea) and I have laundry (yuck) Caitlin lost her work permit papers so I have to get a new one of those as well.
